Rheumatoid Arthritis – Autoimmune Joint Inflammation, Naturally Treatable
What is Rheumatoid Arthritis?
Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disorder in which the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks the lining of the joints. This causes inflammation, pain, swelling, and stiffness, and over time can lead to joint damage and deformity. RA commonly affects smaller joints such as the wrists, fingers, and toes and usually occurs symmetrically on both sides of the body.
In Ayurveda, Rheumatoid Arthritis is known as Aamvata, a condition caused by the accumulation of Ama (undigested toxins) along with aggravated Vata dosha, leading to joint inflammation and pain.
Symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis
Rheumatoid Arthritis often develops gradually and may worsen over time. Common symptoms include:
Joint pain, swelling, and tenderness
Morning stiffness lasting more than one hour
Warmth and redness around joints
Fatigue and weakness
Loss of joint function and deformity in advanced stages
Fever and loss of appetite in some cases
Causes and Risk Factors
Rheumatoid Arthritis can be triggered by:
Autoimmune imbalance
Genetic predisposition
Chronic digestive weakness leading to Ama formation
Stress and sedentary lifestyle
Exposure to cold and damp environments
According to Ayurveda, when Ama blocks the body channels and combines with aggravated Vata, it settles in the joints, causing pain, stiffness, and swelling — known as Aamvata.
Diet and Lifestyle Support
Eat light, warm, and easily digestible food
Avoid curd, cold drinks, oily and heavy foods
Include ginger, turmeric, garlic, and ghee
Drink warm water throughout the day
Practice gentle yoga and stretching
Avoid day sleeping and exposure to cold
