Gout – Painful Uric Acid Disorder, Naturally Treatable
What is Gout?
Gout is a type of inflammatory arthritis caused by the accumulation of uric acid crystals in the joints. This buildup leads to sudden, severe pain, swelling, redness, and warmth in the affected joint. Gout most commonly affects the big toe but can also involve the ankles, knees, wrists, and fingers.
In Ayurveda, gout is known as Vatarakta, a condition caused by the imbalance of Vata dosha along with the vitiation of Rakta dhatu (blood). This imbalance leads to blockage of channels and deposition of toxins in the joints.
Symptoms of Gout
Gout symptoms often appear suddenly and may recur if not treated properly. Common symptoms include:
Intense joint pain, especially at night
Swelling and redness of the joint
Warmth and tenderness in the affected area
Limited joint movement during attacks
Shiny or stretched skin over the joint
Causes and Risk Factors
Gout can be caused by:
High levels of uric acid in the blood
Excess intake of red meat, seafood, and alcohol
Obesity and sedentary lifestyle
Dehydration
Genetic predisposition
Impaired kidney function
According to Ayurveda, when Rakta becomes impure and combines with aggravated Vata, it settles in the joints, resulting in pain, inflammation, and swelling — known as Vatarakta.
