Osteoarthritis – Degeneration of Joints, Naturally Treatable
What is Osteoarthritis?
Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative joint disorder caused by the gradual breakdown of cartilage that cushions the ends of bones. As the cartilage wears away, bones rub against each other, resulting in pain, stiffness, swelling, and restricted joint movement. Osteoarthritis commonly affects weight-bearing joints such as the knees, hips, spine, and hands.
In Ayurveda, Osteoarthritis is known as Sandhivata, a condition caused by aggravated Vata dosha, leading to dryness, degeneration, and weakness of joints and surrounding tissues.
Symptoms of Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis develops slowly and worsens with time. Common symptoms include:
Joint pain during or after movement
Morning stiffness or stiffness after rest
Swelling around joints
Crackling or grating sound during movement
Reduced flexibility and joint mobility
Difficulty in walking, bending, or climbing stairs
Causes and Risk Factors
Osteoarthritis may develop due to:
Aging and wear-and-tear of joints
Obesity and excess pressure on joints
Previous joint injuries
Repetitive joint strain
Weak muscles around joints
Genetic predisposition
According to Ayurveda, increased Vata dosha dries up joint lubrication, leading to cartilage degeneration and pain.
Diet and Lifestyle Support
Eat warm, freshly cooked food
Avoid cold, dry, and processed foods
Include ghee, sesame oil, turmeric, and ginger
Maintain healthy body weight
Practice gentle yoga and strengthening exercises
Avoid overuse of affected joints
Protect joints from cold exposure
Panchakarma Therapy for Osteoarthritis
Panchakarma focuses on nourishing joints, reducing pain, and slowing further degeneration naturally.
