Sciatica – Radiating Nerve Pain from Back to Leg
What is Sciatica?
Sciatica is a condition characterized by pain that radiates along the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back through the hips, buttocks, and down each leg. It typically affects only one side of the body and can range from mild discomfort to severe, disabling pain.
Common Symptoms of Sciatica
Sharp or burning pain in the lower back, buttock, or leg
Numbness or tingling in the affected leg or foot
Muscle weakness in the leg
Pain worsens while sitting, standing for long, or coughing
Difficulty in walking or climbing stairs
The pain can be constant or come and go, depending on the severity and cause.
Causes of Sciatica
Herniated or slipped disc in the spine
Spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal)
Degenerative disc disease
Piriformis syndrome (muscle tightness compressing the nerve)
Injury or trauma to the lower back
Poor posture, obesity, or sedentary lifestyle
Ayurvedic Perspective on Sciatica (Gridhrasi)
In Ayurveda, Sciatica is known as “Gridhrasi”, a type of Vata Vyadhi (neurological disorder caused by aggravated Vata dosha). The condition gets its name because the person’s gait resembles a vulture (Gridhra) due to the pain and limp.
It arises due to imbalanced Vata dosha, often accompanied by Ama (toxins) accumulation, leading to nerve obstruction, pain, and restricted movement.
Panchakarma Therapies for Sciatica
Here are the main Panchakarma treatments used for Sciatica:
1. Snehana (Oleation Therapy)
Internal and external oiling using medicated oils like Mahanarayana taila, Kottamchukkadi taila
Helps lubricate joints, reduce stiffness, and soften toxins (Ama)
2. Swedana (Sudation/Fomentation)
Applying herbal steam to reduce pain, stiffness, and swelling
Often done after Snehana
Types: Nadi Sweda, Pinda Sweda (especially Patra Pinda Sweda using herbal poultices)
3. Basti (Medicated Enema) – Main treatment
Most effective for Vata disorders like sciatica
Uses herbal oils/decoctions inserted into the rectum
Types:
Anuvasana Basti – oil-based enema
Niruha Basti – decoction-based enema
Duration: Often done in a course (8–30 days)
4. Kati Basti
Warm medicated oil is pooled on the lower back using a dough ring
Relieves stiffness and pain locally
5. Raktamokshana (Bloodletting) (in selected cases)
Removes toxins from blood, used if there’s burning sensation, inflammation, or Kapha involvement
When to See a Doctor
If you have persistent lower back and leg pain, loss of bladder control, numbness in the groin or legs, or difficulty walking, seek medical attention promptly to prevent complications like nerve damage.
