Sciatica

Sciatica – Nerve Pain in Lower Back and Legs, Naturally Treatable

What is Sciatica?

Sciatica, called Gridhrasi in Ayurveda, is a condition characterized by pain, tingling, or numbness along the path of the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back down the legs. The pain often affects one side of the body and can vary from mild discomfort to severe, sharp pain.

In Ayurveda, sciatica is mainly caused by aggravated Vata dosha, leading to blockage in the body channels (Srotas) and irritation of nerves, causing pain, stiffness, and limited movement.

Symptoms of Sciatica

Common symptoms include:

  • Sharp, shooting pain in the lower back, hips, or legs

  • Numbness or tingling sensation in the leg or foot

  • Muscle weakness in affected areas

  • Pain that worsens with sitting, standing, or bending

  • Stiffness and reduced mobility in the lower back

Causes and Risk Factors

Sciatica may be caused by:

  • Herniated or slipped discs

  • Degenerative spinal conditions

  • Muscle strain or injury

  • Poor posture or prolonged sitting

  • Obesity or excess body weight

  • Aggravated Vata due to irregular lifestyle or diet

According to Ayurveda, increased Vata dosha causes stiffness, nerve compression, and pain along the sciatic nerve pathway.

Diet and Lifestyle Support

    • Eat warm, easily digestible foods

    • Include ghee, sesame oil, turmeric, and ginger in the diet

    • Avoid cold, dry, and processed foods

    • Maintain proper posture while sitting and standing

    • Practice gentle stretching and yoga for lower back

    • Avoid lifting heavy weights or sudden movements

Panchakarma Therapy for Sciatica

Panchakarma helps relieve nerve pain, improve joint and muscle function, and restore Vata balance.

🔹 Major Panchakarma Treatments for Sciatica:

1. Abhyanga (Therapeutic Oil Massage):
Warm medicated oils are massaged into affected areas to relieve stiffness, improve circulation, and reduce pain.

2. Swedana (Herbal Steam Therapy):
Herbal steam relaxes muscles, reduces inflammation, and improves mobility.

3. Basti (Medicated Enema):
Balances Vata dosha and strengthens nerves and muscles, providing long-term relief.

4. Upanaha & Lepa (Herbal Poultice & Paste):
Applied locally to reduce swelling, inflammation, and pain.

5. Pizhichil (Oil Dripping Therapy):
Continuous pouring of warm medicated oil nourishes muscles, nerves, and joints.
