Panchakarma for Rheumatism: Healing from the Root

Panchakarma is Ayurveda’s most profound detoxification and healing therapy. It helps to eliminate toxins (Ama), balance doshas, reduce inflammation, and rejuvenate joints.

🔹 Key Panchakarma Therapies for Rheumatism:

1. Snehana (Oleation – Internal & External):

Application and intake of medicated ghee/oils to lubricate the body and soften toxins.

2. Swedana (Herbal Steam Therapy):

Induces sweat using herbal decoctions to open the body channels and flush out toxins through the skin.

3. Virechana (Purgation Therapy):

Eliminates excess Pitta and toxins from the intestines through controlled purgation using herbal medicines.

4. Basti (Medicated Enema):

The most important therapy for Vata disorders. Basti with herbal oils and decoctions clears toxins from the colon and pacifies aggravated Vata.

5. Abhyanga (Therapeutic Oil Massage):

Daily warm oil massage improves circulation, reduces stiffness, and nourishes the joints.

6. Lepa & Upanaha (Herbal Pastes & Poultices):

Applied to affected joints to relieve pain, swelling, and inflammation.

Herbal Medicines Commonly Used:

  • Simhanad Guggulu – removes Ama and relieves joint pain

  • Maharasnadi Kwath – effective for joint disorders

  • Yograj Guggulu – strengthens joints and reduces stiffness

  • Ashwagandha, Shallaki, Guduchi, Rasna – anti-inflammatory and rejuvenating herbs
