Cervical Spondylosis – Neck Stiffness and Pain, Naturally Treatable

What is Cervical Spondylosis?

Cervical spondylosis, called Greevastambha in Ayurveda, is a condition caused by wear-and-tear or degeneration of the cervical spine (neck bones and discs). It often leads to stiffness, neck pain, and restricted movement. Nerve compression may also cause numbness, tingling, or weakness in the arms and hands.

In Ayurveda, cervical problems occur due to aggravated Vata dosha, which causes stiffness, dryness, and degeneration in bones, discs, and nerves of the neck region.

Symptoms of Cervical Spondylosis

Common symptoms include:

  • Neck pain and stiffness

  • Restricted neck movement

  • Tingling, numbness, or weakness in arms and hands

  • Headaches, especially at the back of the head

  • Shoulder pain and discomfort

  • Grinding or cracking sound in the neck during movement

Causes and Risk Factors

Cervical spondylosis may be caused by:

  • Age-related wear-and-tear of cervical discs and vertebrae

  • Poor posture while sitting, working, or sleeping

  • Sedentary lifestyle and lack of neck exercises

  • Repetitive neck movements or strain

  • Osteoarthritis or previous neck injuries

According to Ayurveda, increased Vata dosha leads to dryness, stiffness, and degeneration in cervical joints and discs.

Diet and Lifestyle Support

  • Eat warm, freshly cooked, and easily digestible food

  • Include ghee, sesame oil, turmeric, and ginger in your diet

  • Avoid cold, dry, and processed foods

  • Maintain proper posture while sitting and working

  • Practice gentle neck stretches, yoga, and physiotherapy

  • Avoid lifting heavy weights or sudden neck movements

Panchakarma Therapy for Cervical Problems

Panchakarma helps relieve pain, restore neck mobility, and rejuvenate nerves and muscles.

🔹 Major Panchakarma Treatments for Cervical Spondylosis:

1. Abhyanga (Therapeutic Oil Massage):
Warm medicated oils are massaged into the neck, shoulders, and upper back to relieve stiffness and improve circulation.

2. Swedana (Herbal Steam Therapy):
Opens blocked channels, reduces inflammation, and eases neck movement.

3. Pizhichil (Oil Dripping Therapy):
Continuous pouring of warm medicated oil rejuvenates muscles, joints, and nerves in the neck and shoulders.

4. Upanaha & Lepa (Herbal Poultice & Paste):
Applied locally to reduce swelling, stiffness, and pain.

5. Basti (Medicated Enema):
Balances Vata dosha and strengthens bones and nerves, supporting long-term relief.
