Asthma – Breathing Difficulty that Needs Holistic Care
What is Asthma?
Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease of the airways that causes difficulty in breathing. The airways become narrowed and sensitive, leading to wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath. Asthma attacks can vary in severity and may be triggered by allergens, infections, exercise, or emotional stress.
Common Symptoms
Wheezing or whistling sound while breathing
Shortness of breath, especially at night or early morning
Chronic coughing (dry or with phlegm)
Chest tightness or pressure
Fatigue during or after attacks
Common Triggers
Dust, pollen, mold, pet dander, and pollution
Cold air or sudden weather changes
Respiratory infections (cold, flu)
Physical exertion
Emotional stress or anxiety
Smoking or second-hand smoke
Certain foods or preservatives
Ayurvedic View (Tamak Shwasa)
In Ayurveda, Asthma is called Tamak Shwasa, caused by the imbalance of Kapha and Vata doshas. Kapha obstructs the airways with mucus, while Vata triggers breathlessness and spasms. Weak digestion and toxin accumulation (Ama) worsen the condition.
Ayurvedic Treatment Approach
Panchakarma Detox Therapies
Vamana (therapeutic emesis): Clears excess Kapha and mucus
Virechana (purgation): Detoxifies the liver and intestines
Nasya (nasal therapy): Opens respiratory channels and improves oxygen flow
Dhoomapana (herbal smoking): Used in chronic conditions to dry mucus
Herbal Medicines
Vasaka, Kantakari, Tulsi, Yashtimadhu, and Haridra (Turmeric) reduce inflammation and mucus
Chyawanprash and Agastya Rasayana boost lung immunity
Diet & Lifestyle
Avoid cold, heavy, and mucus-forming foods like curd and fried items
Include warm, light, and easily digestible meals
Regular yoga and pranayama (Anulom Vilom, Bhramari) strengthen lung capacity
