Acidity – A Burning Digestive Imbalance
What is Acidity?
Acidity, also known as acid reflux or hyperacidity, occurs when there is an excess production of stomach acid. This acid can move upwards into the esophagus, causing a burning sensation in the chest (heartburn), sour belching, or discomfort after eating. It is one of the most common digestive problems in modern lifestyles.
Symptoms of Acidity
The typical symptoms of acidity include burning in the chest or stomach, bloating, sour burps, nausea, indigestion, and sometimes a bitter taste in the mouth. If left untreated, it can lead to chronic issues like ulcers, gastritis, and poor absorption of nutrients.
Causes and TriggersCauses and Triggers
Acidity is often caused by irregular eating habits, spicy and oily food, overeating, late-night meals, stress, excessive tea/coffee, alcohol, or sleep deprivation. In Ayurveda, acidity is linked to an imbalance in Pitta dosha, the fire element responsible for digestion and metabolism. When Pitta becomes aggravated, it leads to excessive heat and acid in the stomach.
Ayurvedic View (Amla Pitta)
In Ayurveda, acidity is referred to as Amla Pitta, which literally means “sour bile.” It occurs due to aggravated Pitta dosha, especially in individuals who consume hot, spicy, fermented, or fried foods. Emotional stress and exposure to heat also increase Pitta, disturbing the balance of digestive fire (Agni) and leading to symptoms like heartburn and indigestion.
Ayurvedic Treatment Approach
Ayurveda focuses on pacifying the aggravated Pitta dosha and strengthening the digestive fire. Treatment includes:
Herbal medicines such as Avipattikar Churna, Kamdudha Ras, Yashtimadhu, and Sutshekhar Ras to cool and balance Pitta.
Diet recommendations like consuming cooling foods (milk, coconut water, ghee), avoiding spicy and fried items, and eating at regular times.
Lifestyle changes such as managing stress, avoiding late-night meals, and regular hydration.
In chronic cases, Panchakarma therapies like Virechana (therapeutic purgation) may be suggested to cleanse excess Pitta from the system.
Why Choose Ayurveda for Acidity?
Unlike antacids or acid blockers, Ayurveda treat the root cause of acidity rather than giving temporary relief. These systems help restore digestive balance, reduce dependency on medicines, and prevent recurrence. With proper diet, herbs, and lifestyle correction, acidity can be managed effectively — naturally and holistically.
