Osteoarthritis – Degeneration of Joints, Naturally Treatable
What is Osteoarthritis?
Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common type of arthritis, caused by the gradual wear and tear of cartilage that cushions the ends of bones in the joints. As the cartilage breaks down, bones begin to rub against each other, leading to pain, stiffness, and reduced joint movement. It most commonly affects weight-bearing joints such as the knees, hips, lower back, and hands.
Symptoms of Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis develops slowly and worsens over time. Common symptoms include joint pain during or after movement, morning stiffness, swelling, a grating sensation, and loss of flexibility. As the condition progresses, daily activities like walking, climbing stairs, or bending may become painful and difficult.
Causes and Risk Factors
Osteoarthritis can be caused by aging, repetitive joint use, injuries, obesity, genetics, and weak muscles around the joints. In Ayurveda, osteoarthritis is closely linked to Sandhivata, a condition caused by aggravated Vata dosha, which leads to dryness, stiffness, and degeneration of bone and cartilage.
Panchakarma Therapy for Osteoarthritis
Panchakarma is Ayurveda’s advanced detox and healing method. It doesn’t just reduce pain — it rejuvenates the joints, improves mobility, and stops further degeneration.
🔹 Major Panchakarma Treatments for Osteoarthritis:
1. Abhyanga (Therapeutic Oil Massage):
Warm medicated oils are massaged deeply into joints to lubricate, nourish, and relieve pain and stiffness.
2. Swedana (Herbal Steam Therapy):
Steaming with herbal decoctions helps open up blocked channels, reduce inflammation, and ease joint movement.
3. Basti (Medicated Enema):
This is the main treatment for Vata-related disorders. Herbal decoctions and oils are introduced rectally to balance Vata and strengthen bones and joints.
4. Janu Basti (Knee Oil Pooling Therapy):
For knee osteoarthritis, a warm medicated oil is retained over the knee joint for 20–30 minutes inside a dough boundary. It nourishes cartilage and reduces pain.
5. Pizhichil (Oil Dripping Therapy):
Lukewarm medicated oil is poured all over the body in rhythmic movements — great for rejuvenating the joints and muscles.
6. Lepa & Upanaha (Herbal Paste & Poultice):
Applied locally over affected joints to reduce swelling and improve blood flow.
Diet and Lifestyle Support:
Warm, cooked, and easily digestible foods
Avoid cold, dry, stale, or fermented foods
Include ghee, sesame oil, turmeric, ginger in diet
Regular gentle exercise like yoga, walking
Avoid cold exposure and overuse of joints
